Dangerous Goods

Shipping dangerous goods is a serious business. Dangerous goods, also referred to as “Restricted Articles”, are described as articles or substances that are capable of posing a significant risk to health, safety or property when transported by air (IATA Dangerous Goods Regulation, 42nd Edition, Section 1, 1.0 pg. 1). All dangerous goods must be declared and packed according to DG regulations. Most dangerous goods can be safely transported by air if they are in approved quantities and properly packaged and handled.
Many seemingly “harmless” items used every day around the workplace or house may be regulated as dangerous goods/hazardous material when transported by air. Law requires proper labelling, packing, documentation and training to ship materials that fall under the broad definition of “dangerous goods”. Our acceptance of dangerous goods is in compliance with the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations and all established domestic and international rules and regulations.
Should there be an accident as a result of undeclared or wrongly declared dangerous goods, then only the shipper is liable for the damage arising. Goods/Hazardous Materials could subject the shipper to potential penalties that could be imposed. It is a violation of law to tender cargo containing dangerous goods that have not been properly declared, identified, packaged, marked, labelled, or documented to any airline. Failure to properly identify and comply with the requirements of dangerous goods shipment can result in IATA maximum penalties of up to five years in prison and fines of $250,000 or more.

Packages may include authentication seals and use security printing to help indicate that the package and contents are not counterfeit. Packages also can include anti-theft devices, such as dye-packs, RFID tags, or electronic article surveillance tags that can be activated or detected by devices at exit points and require specialized tools to deactivate. Using packaging in this way is a means of loss prevention.
